Leaders from U.S. and Latin America join voices to support philanthropy and raise awareness

The unprecedented PODER Philanthropy Forum – hosted on Wednesday, March 12 in Miami by PODER magazine, the premier publication for the business elite focusing on U.S. Hispanic and Latin American policymaking and corporate strategy, together with Grupo Televisa, Banamex, Miami Dade College, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the city of Miami, among others – aimed to raise awareness and encourage discussion amongst business leaders, politicians and celebrities on the importance of philanthropy to Latin America.

By all accounts, the Forum concluded having achieved its goals with tremendous success.

During the all-day event packed with thoughtful presentations, lectures and panel conversations, participants discussed the many possibilities for philanthropy through accounts of selflessness, creativity, ambition and sense of purpose. Microfinance pioneer and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus and One Laptop per Child founder Nicholas Negroponte detailed the genesis of their own philanthropic endeavors; president of Google.org Larry Brilliant and influential business leaders president of Grupo Televisa Emilio Azcárraga Jean and president of the Group Banamex Roberto Hernandez encouraged companies to incorporate philanthropy as a fundamental business practice; and celebrated artists such as Ricky Martin, Diego Luna and the rock group Maná each echoed the need for all of Latin America to make a stronger commitment to charitable giving.

La Opinión and Impremedia is a national partner to the “Ya es hora” campaign targeting Latino civic participation in the presidential elections and is currently working with the State of California on a program meant to inform low income residents about resources available to them regardless of status. Though he never lived to see the foundation he envisioned, his sister has made it her life’s work. Viviane Senna is President of Instituto Ayrton Senna. She earned a degree in psychology from PUC/SP – Pontifícia Universidade Católica of São Paulo (Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo), and a specialist degree in Jungian Psychology from the Instituto Sedes Sapientiaes of the Catholic University.
